Gunless But Not Powerless.

So I know that this is a stupid rant, but I don’t like my superheroes to have guns. This is coming up at this point because I’ve started paying attention to the Green Lantern commercials gearing up for the film’s release.

Let it be known that I love Ryan Reynold’s. I’ve liked him since I saw Waiting, which is a pretty disgusting movie, but one that shows the talent of the actors involved. I’ve seen Ryan Reynold’s playing a variety of comedy roles since. And I’m also a very avid believer in the ability of comedians to do serious roles. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a comedian who wasn’t capable of doing tragedy or drama.

The more I see of Green Lantern, though, the more I worry about the out come. And a lot of that has to do with the number of ring-powered guns involved. Superheroes are super not just because they have extraordinary powers, but because they are often beyond the baser instincts of the average person. They aren’t really better than us, they are still plagued by the same worries and concerns, but it is a bit like Greek gods. They have the same stresses, but also a bit more. They have responsibilities that we don’t often have to think of. More is in their scope, so more is in their mind.

Guns are so very human. I mean, really, it is all direct weaponry, but guns seem to be the worst, because it removes the immediate element of the personal encounter. Guns allow distance, not just of the physical kind, but also of the mental and emotional.

Bladed weapons at least make the attacker be within the same space as the victim/opponent. The closer bodily that a person is, the more likely they are to connect on a more intimate level with what they are actually taking part in.

I want my heroes to realize what they are doing and who is involved.

I’m hoping that Green Lantern will be good. I do like the cast, and I don’t have a lot of background noise about what GL should be, so I’m hoping that I’ll be able to enjoy the movie as just a film, not trying to compare it to other sources.

But there is still a large part of me that is hoping that the guns won’t be as big a part as they seem to be in the commercials.
